One Man Machine and his Powsurfing Dream - Biglines.com Story

One hell of a good write up on the biglines.com homepage today!

Big thanks to the fellas up north for tracking me down and doing the leg work on this story.  Really well written and spot on.  I was sold at the first paragraph:

"Ok, picture this: you’re surfing a pow line, slashing turns and letting the sunshine light up your roostertails. Out of the corner of your eye, you peep a poppy little pillow and you know the landings perfect. You line it up, adjust your feet and BAM.
Kickflip.
Your feet catch the board and your face catches an updraft of pow as you stomp your landing and set up for your next turn…
Sounds impossible, right?
For Jeremy Jensen, it’s anything but."

That updraft of powder in your face is what makes powsurfing (or any type of powder riding) truly awesome.  The guys at biglines.com obviously know whats up.

Mayday!

May 1st brought bluebird conditions and if you knew where to find it, there was cold dry pow to surf as well. It's becoming harder to find people out there that are still in winter mode.. the backcountry up here is pretty much a ghost town right now. The past two sundays I haven't seen or heard a soul up there other than my homies and I. More powder for us to slash I guess.

I knew it was supposed to cloud up this afternoon so I showed up early and sessioned solo for a couple of hours until Craig and Dewey showed up. I managed to find some nice pow up high in the N facing slopes.

slashes and photos: Jeremy Jensen

All it takes is a little bump in the slope and it's party time. I found this bump and popped some tricks.

I've been finding some pretty fun shots where I can ghost my sled and get some turns. I rigged my pov cam to my sled and powsurfed behind it as it ghosted down the hill.

One of the little less know benefits of shrednecking is hot food for lunch. My little cooker attaches to the pipe and heats up leftovers to perfection. The menu for today: Corned beef with roasted potatoes and carrots - served at 10,000 feet. Yum.

Craig and Dewey finally showed up around noon and with them came fast moving storm clouds and eventually, a full on blizzard. It went from sunny warm and bluebird to a january style blizzard within minutes. We were forced to surf the trees for a little while until the storm passed and the sun popped back out. This cycle would be the norm for the rest of the day. 15 minutes of blizzard, 15 minutes of sunshine. Gotta love spring weather in Utah.

We had numbers now so we were able to start taking runs. We sessioned a familiar spot where we used to ride snowboards back in the day.

Jeremy... getting it

Our snowpack is so high this year that we were able to do a couple of entrances that had not been filled in for years. Pretty scary drop in. Tight and steep!

Dropping in

The first turn after the drop in - high speed!

A few turns later, a perfect roller to bust ollies off of

It was so much fun we had to do it again! Actually, the only good snow left was beneath the cliff bands so if we wanted the pow we had to brave the steep, skinny drop in again. It was way scarier this time with our old tracks and two bomb holes below where Dewey and Keneka had landed on their snowboards.

Jeremy - hauling ass thru chop beneath the skinny drop in

Craig and I tried a follow cam run.. not easy. Trying to stay close enough to keep him in the picture while getting blasted with his spray was pretty hard.

We have been pretty lucky this spring with some nice cool temps and plenty of moisture. Super stoked to be powsurfing this late in the season. Spoiled, but still hoping for more!

Spring Waves

This season just keeps dishing up the goods and of course we keep on slashing away at them.

April has brought us a steady flow of fresh powder with very few breaks in the clouds. This means less bluebird days but at least the quality of powder remains light and dry. We have been forced into the thicker woods for visibility's sake but I have no complaints. The goods are in the woods.

I apologize for all the GoPro shots in advance... The snowy weather has kept my nicer cameras in their bags for much of the season. I try to at least mix it up with some unseen angles.

Getting barreled

I love spring time in Northern Utah. Most resorts are closed and the masses have moved on to riding bikes and golfing. The storms keep rolling thru, raining in the valley and dumping snow in the mountains, leaving tons of fresh pow for me and my homies to track up.

120cm Powder Skate - Slaying the deep pow.

I keep getting requests from people for longer boards... trust me, you don't need the giant board that you think you might want! Our boards are designed to be much shorter than snowboards for a number of reasons and as you can see even the shortest board we make dominates the deep & light pow.

Here's a quick peep of the 120cm slaying some April pow pow.

Playgrounds

I'm loving how powsurfing has opened up so much new terrain to play in and on. Features that we would normally disregard have become the source of all sorts of good times. It really makes you look at the mountain differently and opens up new worlds of possibilities.

I've been driving by this feature for years on my snowmobile. I finally took a closer look at it and this cave/couloir made for a perfect gap jump.

We threw together this quick kicker to see what we could do off it. If you could make it past the insane run it at extremely high speeds then you got to boost off it. Made for some pretty cool footage... either you would slam super hard on the in run, or you would get a nice boost into a perfect landing.

I've always wanted to kickflip off of a cliff, so we made it happen one fine day. It was great fun until my board shot out and hit the snowmobile, exploding on impact.

Kickflip rock drop...scary.

Pop shovit in the pow!

A simple pow slash always puts a smile on my face. There has been no shortage of these this season. In fact, my face is sore from smiling so much.

Non-stop powduh

The powder has been stacking up deep this year... the big boards have been seeing quite a bit of action.

This winter has been relentless. A constant flow of storms has kept us riding fresh pow every time we get out. Sunny days have been few and far between but the quality of snow has kept powsurfing conditions epic to say the least. Bigger airs, faster lines.... powsurfing just keeps getting more and more fun and the possibilities reveal themselves every day.

Full Steam

The latest round of boards, hot off the press. - The "powder skate", "slasher", "slasher 140" and "Powder Shark 140"

The recent lack of posts on the blog is certainly not a reflection of a lack of riding this season. Footage and photos are stacking up so fast I can hardly keep up. R&D on some longer boards and new shapes has been super fun and the progression of riding is moving ahead faster than ever. Bigger cliffs, steeper lines, and technical tricks are an everyday occurrence. More and more riders are catching wind of powsurfing and realizing the potential. People all over the world are testing the boards and I have had nothing but positive feedback and intense stoke on riding the boards. Once they step on one of these they are instantly sold.

Warming up with a little drop which sends you straight for a little hip jump (pic below)

If all your interested in doing is making turns, you may be missing half of the point of bindingless riding. - 360 Kickflip in the Utah Backcountry.

One glory slash is worth a hundred turns!

Here I am talking shit about turning... Seriously though, here's my philosophy, "Turns are what you do to control your speed and guide you to the next feature that you plan on dropping, launching or powerslashing"... you can quote me on that.

Powsurfing with the Provo Bros

Neil and I scoping the goods.

I met up with Ian and Neil Provo on sunday to introduce them to Grassroots Powdersurfing and shoot some footy for an upcoming webisode. These guys are doing some killer video work. Check out Inspired Media Concepts to see some of their stuff.

We cruised up to one of the classic zones in my neck of the woods and got right to it. Seeing the smiles on their faces and hearing the shouts of joy after their first runs on my powdersurfers really made my day. It's rad to see people pick it right up and just start shredding... Ian and Neil were both killing it right off the bat. We hammered out some fun little lines in some epic snow conditions. A fresh foot or two of dense pow had settled nicely over a plethora of boulders creating small jumps everywhere. Perfect for popping ollies in between pow slashes.

Slash

Neil droppin.. He was really diggin the "sardine" deck.

Ian and Neil brought up their buddy "Fishbone" who skillfully captured the magic shooting video and stills as we slashed and bounced our way down some really fun lines. It was nice to just ride and not worry about capturing the footage by myself. We all had a super fun session, it was rad to get out and ride with some new dudes. I'm stoked to go powsurf some lines in the wasatch with the Provo boys.

We left to a gorgeous setting sun at our backs. Stoked for next time.
