The Powsurf Chronicles - Teaser is out!

Introducing "The Powsurf Chronicles" a series of short films about powsurfing.  We will be dropping Chronicles throughout the winter season to keep the stoke running high and share with our audience the things that set Grassroots Powdersurfing (and powsurfing in general) apart from the rest of the world of snow sports.

The teaser is just the tip of the iceberg and it should give you a small glimpse of what's in store for the future.  With so many bangers, hammers and hum-dingers to sift thru, it took a while to get this little teaser done.  We are stoked to pump out a few short videos this year that offer a little glimpse into what we have been up to over the past few years.  The good times, the bad, history, direction, evolution, potential... there are so many avenues to base these films on.. the hard part is picking one and sticking with it.

So here's the tease... and stay tuned for more.  We will crank these out the best we can with the limited time we have.  Hopefully they will open some eyes and minds, and get people stoked to go outside, grab a Grassroots powsurfer, and go get a face full of powder.

A Foot of Fresh Pow on May 25th!!!!

Any powder day after the end of april is gravy. I love gravy. We have had some pretty good helpings this season. Today we knew it was gonna be good and it wasn't going to last long so we pulled out of town at 5:45 am and headed for the goods.

The powder test I performed this morning resulted in a rating of "BLOWER!!!"

We parked to unload the sleds and we were standing in 10 inches of light and dry pow under bluebird skies. We rallied up to the top and knocked out a couple of runs each in Rock Bowl as quick as we could. There was a foot + of fresh pow. The conditions were blower so I was alternating runs between my snowboard and my powsurfer. Things were heating up quick on the east facing slope so we headed for a higher more north facing zone.

We got to the Lgn Ln sector and it was holding some epic snow. So we frantically lapped it as many times as possible - racing against the warming weather. I had one of the funnest lines in a long time on the powsurfer. I entered the chute entrance, hit a little ice patch and ass checked the top of the chute, causing a wet slide that would take me down about 50ft and land me in a pile of wet debris... it was more funny than scary. I got my board back under my feet and had the sickest run... high speed face shots and rollers lined themselves up perfectly for me to ollie off of. Funny how the funnest run of the day would come on a powdersurf board.

This could be my last ollie of the season on the powsurf.. stoked it was a good one.
We called it a day at about 1:30. The weather was scorching, the pow was cooked and we were both running super low on oil.

What a killer day!!! The snowmobiling was super fun, the snowboarding was sick, the powsurfing was epic and it was a beautiful way to end another winter season. I got home and parked the sled in the backyard for the first time all season - just to taunt mother nature. I hope she makes me drag it out again for another pow day this year. But if not, we ended on a perfect note.

Spirits were high today until I got home to the news that an old friend had passed away after a battle with breast cancer. Krista Moroge was an amazing skateboarder, snowboarder, and human being. She was extremely talented and motivated far beyond the average person. Her inspiration lives on inside all of us. We will miss you Krista.

May 22nd 2010 Powsurf Solo Session

Slashing bindingless in May!

We got a nice shot of 6-8 inches of light n dry pow on friday night. Most of my homies have given up for the season it seems because I couldn't find a single bro to join me on a late season powsurfing mission. So I went solo.. I couldn't resist.

I showed up to really good conditions and new snow that bonded nicely to the slush beneath. Most of the jumps had melted away and the cliffs had melted back leaving no good takeoffs. I was limited on what I could shred but I managed to find some pretty fun stuff.

I did a few warm up laps in an open bowl that I could ghost ride the sled down for my pickup. It was pretty fun on the powsurfer although the light was a little flat. When that was played I walked over the the "toilet bowl" and packed out a nice little kicker to try a few tricks off of. I had mixed results.. I mostly just slammed alot. The toughest part was the run-in to the jump. I would either be going too slow or way too fast.

I think I slammed on 4 or 5 attempts at a 360 shovit and cracked my board landing in bomb holes :-(

Flying thru the air out of control... I went at least 15 feet past my landing slamming into the backside of a windlip... ouch.

I got tired of getting worked by this jump so I moved to a new zone. The light came out and things got really fun. I hiked the pinball sector for a few fun lines and took a couple pow shots using my remote control shutter release.

I was about to leave when I saw the perfect place to safely ghost ride my sled and get myself a solid 700 vertical run in an open field of pow.

If you look close you can see a little speck in the middle of the shot- that's me slashing down on the sardine (and that is my ghost ride track to the left).

On the way to the goods....note the only track within 100 miles is Benor's and I am right behind him! Today is gonna be sick.

We were pretty amped to show up to a foot + of fresh pow and not a track in sight or any sound of sledneckers in the distance. Things were gonna get rad..... until the track on my sled broke- sending me flying over the handlebars as the sled rolled over. No bueno... It was up to Benor to chauffeur all 4 of us around for the day.

We still managed to get the goods. Some easier access stuff, we sessioned a kicker for a bit, then a kicker over a cliff (on our snowboards), then we spent the rest of the day powdersurfing.

Slashing pow runs and building small jumps and hitting the natural rollers. A few kickflips were landed, a bunch of shovits, the biggest backside 180 I have ever done and copius amounts of powder was slashed.

We started the day off snowboarding (aaron was skiing) so we could take full advantage of all the terrain as best we could. Adrenaline was pumping all morning.. My legs and hands were shaking after every run. These lines really get your heart going, especially once you enter the ampitheater. The already steep hillside just rolls away out of sight and you have to be 100% committed or you are probably going to eat shit hard.

We pretty much had our way with this zone all day but I had to get one more .... without the aid of bindings.

This is one of my favorite snowboarding runs. Long, steep and exposed... I was stoked be the first to ever shred this line on the powdersurf board. (today was my second run on it) My choice of deck was the "Sardine". A directional board that is pretty skinny compared to most of my boards. It was definitely the board of choice today because the snow was barely deep enough to be able to turn in.

I went for the bomb drop off the top and slammed pretty good, the landing was much flatter than it looked... Oh well, the last 1000 feet of my run was epic. The snow was slightly variable and that can be really tough without bindings. I made almost all the way down before taking two of the hardest slams I have taken all year. Full body slam while hauling top speed... my brain shook around in my head like jello- ouch.

We decided to powdersurf for the rest of the afternoon. It was pretty fun but the variable snow conditions gave us quite a bit of hell. Lots of slamming.

So after 12 hours of killing it I was pretty pooped. This was certainly one of those days I will remember for a while.

Berfday Shredding

The first day shredding as a 34 year old was a pretty good one. It started off as a semi-cloudy day over in the mini-golf sector. Dunker, Grings, and I arrived at the top (we were doing the triple tow-up) ready to kill it. I dropped in and headed straight for "Bill" (a cliff that we like to hit). "Bill" was actually bigger than I have ever seen it and the take-off was lookin good from the bottom so I charged straight for it and stuck a BS 360 indy off it just to prove to myself that I wasn't "too old". We took one more run at minigolf as the clouds and snow moved in. We moved our base camp over to the White Pine Woods and proceeded to slash the hell out of that zone on my powsurf boards. I took a couple runs on Dunkers bindingless "Banana hammock" - it was fun but not as fun as riding my powsurf boards. I experimented with my Canon 7D on a monopod getting some POV action. It turned out pretty sick. Peep the video below for some action...

After 4-5 bindingless runs we decided to strap back into our snowboards and proceed to slash more pow.

Good friends and good snow... that's all I really wanted for my Birthday.

Powdersurf Split-Board

I finally finished my first (and possibly the world's first) split Powdersurf board. I can't wait to try this bad boy out. Hippies will be tripping balls when they see me blow by them on this little unit.

The wife was not stoked on this mess.

Grassroots Powdersurfing

Will Powdersurfing change the world? Maybe... Will it replace snowboarding? No. Does it make you feel like a little kid when you do it? Yes. Is it incredibly fun? Yes. Is it here to stay? Hell yes.

I am proud to be a part of nurturing this new sport and helping push the possibilities. I think that we have something truly unique here that may help shape the future of winter board sports. In my opinion, the advantages our boards offer over existing bindingless snowsliders is unique and completely legit. Our audience is somewhat limited to those with access to powder - but the possibilities for progression are endless.

Introducing "Grassroots Powdersurfing". A line of powdersurf boards for all types of riders. This is NOT "noboarding", this is not "snowskating"... it is "Powdersurfing". A unique sport heavily influenced by snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing.

All who have tried these boards are instantly hooked. And for good reason. There is so much fun to be had and so many possibilities.

I will be updating this blog as often as I can and will be linking to a previous blog containing Powdersurf related entries that I have logged over the past 3 years. I have poured countless hours into creating the best boards I can with my resources. Countless hours documenting adventures with photo and video. Blood, sweat, tears, time, and money sacrificed to try to make this into something we can share with like-minded people.
